Farewelling our lovely Whaea Kerry

Nga Papahu has had a wonderful year with Whaea Kerry who came to our class every week to teach us Cybersmart and clever digital technology skills. She shared an awesome lunch with us on our last day, and then it was very hard to say, 'farewell'. We would like to show our thanks by sharing these Christmas messages, which has brought together many of the skills she has taught us. 'Merry Chrsitmas, Whaea Kerry.' xxx

Meeting Ingrid Banwell

 18th November, 2020

Something very special happened today in Nga Papahu. We had a Google Meet session with artist Ingrid Banwell, whose work inspired our gorgeous paintings last term. We chatted with Ingrid for almost 45 minutes online, asked her lots of questions and showed her our digital art which was also inspired by her work. Thanks so much for your time, Ingrid - you gave us lots of tips and tricks for our future art projects, and positive feedback on our work. A BIG thank you must go to our Manaiakalani teacher, Whaea Kerry, for making all the connections happen. You rock, Kerry :)

Is it Real or Fake?

Today, with Whaea Kerry, we learned to decide whether something we see on the internet is real or fake. We watched a House Hippo video - the hippo was the size of a piece of bread and ate raisins and chips. We decided that that video was a fake.

Ingrid Banwell inspired Artwork

We have been studying the art work of New Zealand artist, Ingrid Banwell. She was born in NZ but now lives in Australia. Ingrid loves to travel around the world, and has her artwork displayed in many countries.

We focused on three points of Ingrid's paintings; firstly, the main idea of her painting always crosses the borders somewhere. Secondly, the big outside border has smaller drawings there that are relevant to the picture, and thirdly, the inside thinner border is a plain, repetitive pattern in two colours.

We presented our work at assembly, and some pieces are going to be displayed in the school vestibule

Google Drawing

We had an online Cybersmart session with Whaea Kerry today. We learned about Germ Bots fighting Covid-19. We created our own Germ Bots using Google Drawing; creating the bots using shapes, moving them around, grouping them together then adding a funky background. Here's some of our work :)

Keeping our Teeth Clean

A quick inquiry into how to keep our smiles bright - sponsored by Colgate.  Each student got a Minion toothbrush to take home and red toothbrushes to keep in the classroom. We should brush our teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste to keep our teeth and gums healthy, strong and clean.  Bonus brush after lunch each day!

Animation

6th August 2020

Today, we learned animation using Google Slides; we inserted a static background, then used a .png image (that has no background), and moved it around the screen to make our first animation!

Matariki

We celebrated Matariki - Maori new year, by constructing a concertina book which showcased Te Iwa o Matariki (The nine stars of Matariki), followed by a full day celebrating Ururangi - the star connected with the 'winds of the sky' by weaving incredible fishing kites and Manu Wahine. Thank you Matua Hako for your help!

NZ Garden Bird Survey

Our class participated in this year's NZ Garden Bird survey, an annual public survey that informs Landcare Research about health of our environment. They survey is the country's longest running citizen science project.  We spent time learning about the birds we were looking out for, we made bird masks, then we took our survey out and about around the school to record our findings on the tally sheet. Finally, we uploaded our finding to the online bird register.

Sweet sounds of Nga Papahu

We've been learning about rhythm and following a simple percussion score. We were playing along to Adele's 'Rolling in the Deep', and Queen's 'We will Rock You' with our Bucket Percussion orchestra! Also, we are learning to play the ukulele, and can play chords; C, Am, G, F, and D. It's amazing how many songs you can play with just 5 chords. Lastly, we have enjoyed singing in the music room - this is 'Taipa Area Primary's Got Talent!'

Public and Private

Today we learned about things that we should keep private and things that we can share publicly.  We also learned a new shortcut which helped us to copy things.  Ctrl + C makes copies and Ctrl + V pastes onto a document.

Karma did really well and helped others in the class too.    This is Karma's work showing her learning.

Meeting Whaea Kerry

Today was our first visit from Whaea Kerry.  We learned about our Google Drive.  We also learned a shortcut to help you find words on a page or slide online.  Type Ctrl + F and a search box opens that lets you search for a word.   We are creating a class slide about ourselves so we can share it on our class blog.

We've also been learning about the Corona Virus.   We created some corona virus pictures and wrote some stories about monsters.

Not everyone was here today from our class so there are a few missing.  We wanted to share this photo of our corona virus pictures and our funny face photo.
